That’s been James Emslie’s mindset since day one.
Before founding DTX Joinery, James was deep in the world of engineering. He built complex tech systems, designed thermal displays, worked on global prototypes, and even co-developed a heating system to protect bees from pests. His career took him from Auckland to the US and back again. But no matter how advanced the tech, James always loved the hands-on stuff. The building. The problem-solving. The satisfaction of making something real.
So he brought that thinking into joinery.
DTX Joinery now operates from a fully equipped factory in Otara, serving clients right across Auckland. From large commercial projects to classroom fit-outs and custom cabinetry, the team brings the same practical smarts and attention to detail to every job.
But the group isn’t a one-man band. James has built a team of skilled craftspeople who, like him, don’t shy away from a tricky brief. They thrive on challenges and take pride in finding smart, practical solutions that not only work but look stunning too.
You’ll find DTX’s work in schools, offices, homes, and new builds all over Auckland. No matter the project, the mission stays the same: make things that last, fit perfectly, and feel like they belong.
Behind the scenes, it’s a bit of a family affair. James’s wife, Michelle, helps keep things ticking over with the accounts, and their two amazing kids are never far from the workshop either, whether they’re “supervising” or just looking for snacks.
